THE SHACK by William P. Young

The Shack is a story of a man Mackenzie (Mack) Allen Philip whose youngest daughter Missy got abducted during a family vacation. Though her body was never found but the police found out evidences to prove that she had been brutally murdered by a serial killer in an abandoned shack.
The story begins four years after this incident when Mack who has been living in the shadow of his Great Sadness gets an invitation from God to meet in the shack for a get together. Although Mack is apprehensive in the beginning but still he visits the Shack and there he spends a long weekend with God.
The Shack has become an all time favorite book which is full of dialog and has very little action. Young never wrote this book for the plot or story. His main focus was always on content and the teachings that it contains. The book does not seem to be boring even after long passages of dialog. Through this book William shows himself to be a skillful writer and struck a chord with Christians. Young covers a wide range of theological topics all of which are related to theme of Mack’s immense suffering and his inability to trust god who made him and his daughter suffer so brutally. The main theme of the book is the absolute nature of good. Young makes his readers understand that good exists only in relation to the evil. He explains that people can have true faith in god only when they believe him to be good.
The book besides having many flaws managed to become a bestseller as it has the potential to change the life of the readers as Mack’s life gets completely transformed at the end. It is not only a book; it’s a phenomenon, an invitation to take you on to the journey to the very heart of god.

SERIOUS MEN by : Manu Joseph

It is always observed that the novel by the Indinovelists, the protagonist of which belongs to lower class carries the risk of caricature along with it.  Mostly the characters like servant, driver or any other member of lower class is either shown very warm hearted or extremely intelligent and sly. Similar is Manu Joseph’s character Ayyan Mani but in the character and literary execution, his boss Arvind Acharya overshadows him.

Ayyan Mani –the anti hero of the novel is a Tamil Dalit who lives in Mumbai’s chawl. Working in the Institute of Theory and Research as a Personal Assistant to its director, Arvind Acharya, Mani is the man who dares to think beyond his grim circumstances. For this he weaves a plan that involves turning his son Adi into a genius at least for a short span of time. He feeds his son formidable questions to pose at school so that he can be proved as a genius. The staff of his son’s school is deceived into believing that Adi is a genius that even includes bigoted Christian Headmistress, sister chastity and soon the deception starts getting out of hand.

While Acharya is a head astronomer at the Institute of Theory and Research is a brilliant and a self absorbed man who is carried away by his own genius that proves as his saving grace at the end. Joseph’s book shines the brightest at the point when Acharya’s life crumbles into a sad heap as he was accused of fudging the scientific data.

‘Serious Men’ is a smart novel in which Joseph has very intelligently and brilliantly captured the social tension in the post mandal India and racial as well as class divisions that alarm and frighten the Brahmins. The book falls into the category of ‘must reads’ as it continuously explores the many different areas of small politics around us whether it’s between the small man in a chawl and the more laid back one, between the poor but brilliant boy in school and the more prosperous ones.

FAULT LINES- How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy.

FAULT LINES
The title of the Raghuram Rajan’s new book Fault lines refers to the hidden and extremely destructive fissures present in our world’s economic system that was the primary cause of the financial collapse of 2007 and the Great Recession. Theses culprits are none other than greedy bankers, sleepy regulators and irresponsible borrowers whose individual choices that collectively brought about the economic meltdown.

Raghuram Rajan was one of the few economists who warned the world of the global financial crisis before it even hit. In the book Rajan warns us of the serious flaws in the economy that need to be fixed to prevent potentially more devastating crisis that awaits us. According to Rajan there were two main causes that led to initial breakdown-One was stagnant wages and the other was growing inequality in the U.S. All this led to the reduced purchasing power of many middle class households which gave birth to an urgent demand for credit. The financial industry that had already gained encouragement from the government responded back by supplying home equity loans, subprime mortgages and auto loans. Most economists had failed to consider that the side effects of this unrestrained credit growth would turn out to be more devastating.

Raghuram writings are always well reasoned and based on sound set of facts. While the book is worth it even for the explanation of why we had a crisis and is even the most thought provoking contribution in the aftermath of the financial crisis. Readers will find that the book is full of great examples and cases and will certainly question some long held biases about current economic conditions in western countries. Raghuram in his book also lays out some common patterns of global economic behavior in households , markets and governments and shows that when economic conditions become so demanding the difference of behavior between developed and developing countries becomes negligible.
